Description

The tamoxifen, known commercially as Nolvadex, is an antiestrogen belonging to the triphenylethylene class. It is classified as selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) and exhibits a mixed action: it acts as an antagonist in some tissues and as an agonist in others.

In men, tamoxifen acts primarily as estrogen receptor blocker, preventing estrogen from exerting its effects in various parts of the body. At the level of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, Nolvadex reduces the negative feedback of estrogen on the hypothalamus, promoting an increase in GnRH secretion.
