Product characteristics

The testosterone undecanoate works as a slow-acting form of the primary male sex hormone, the T. Testicles and prostate tissues develop through this hormone. It supports female reproductive functions too. Male secondary sexual characteristics rely on this compound. It builds bone density and increases muscle mass.

Testosterone undecanoate supports reproductive health. It also helps prevent bone loss in both men and women. Insufficient levels of the T in men can cause a number of changes, including physical frailty and loss of bone mass.

Anabolic effects from this medicine include muscle growth and faster recovery times. It also stimulates protein synthesis and glycogen stores. Since the hormone regulates many physiological processes, it is one of the most important molecules in the human body. For this reason, testosterone undecanoate-based drugs are used both in older men with age-related hypogonadism and, in sports, as the basis for anabolic steroid protocols.

How it works inside the body

Testosterone undecanoate works by binding to the androgen receptors and it is the precursor to another biologically active androgen, the dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is formed through the action of the enzyme 5α-reductase. DHT has an affinity for androgen receptors that is about five times greater than that of the T itself.

Once bound to the receptor, the hormone-receptor complex undergoes a structural change and transmits the signal to the cell nucleus, where the androgenic effects manifest themselves through the regulation of the expression of specific DNA genes.

Testosterone undecanoate can also be converted to estrogen by the action of the enzyme aromatase, a process known as aromatization. In this context, it is primarily estrogens that activate the negative feedback mechanism on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, leading to the suppression of endogenous production when exogenous hormones are administered.

Clinical applications

Testosterone is included in the list of World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines, confirming its vital role in primary health care. Viewing testosterone undecanoate solely as a steroid for increasing muscle mass is an oversimplification: it is a necessary hormonal medication

In clinical practice, testosterone undecanoate is used to treat male hypogonadism, from the gender dysphoria and, in some cases, as part of the treatment for specific forms of breast cancer

Since hormone production naturally declines with age, patients take a hormone replacement therapy, also known as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Testosterone undecanoate helps maintain serum levels of the hormone within the physiological range, compensating for the natural decline in androgen production associated with aging.

Effects on the nervous and cognitive systems

In men, testosterone undecanoate also affects cognitive functions like mood and memory. Some preliminary evidence suggests that low levels of the T may act as a risk factor for cognitive decline and for the development of Alzheimer’s-type dementia.

Both sexes maintain general well-being through testosterone undecanoate. This medication prevents numerous diseases.
